Lecture: The Tale Your Garden Tells

Thursday, April 3, 7:30 pm
Free and Open to the Public
Lang Performing Arts Center Cinema

Moving can be an exciting yet overwhelming undertaking, whether it’s moving to the next town or moving across the country. For many, the fun challenge is figuring out where everything will go inside the house, but of course for gardeners they are first thinking of their new garden and how to make it their own. Tom Fischer will take you on his move from the east to west coast and how he has been able to create his garden in a new environment. As his new passion is Mediterranean-style gardens he will highlight plants that have a Mediterranean look but are hardy in the Northeast so that we are not too envious of his lush and mild Portland climate! Join us for a reception following the lecture.

Tom Fischer, Editor-in-Chief of Timber Press, is a recent transplant to Portland, Oregon, having spent the previous 18 years in Boston. For 14 of those years, he was on the staff of Horticulture magazine as Senior Editor, Executive Editor, and, for the last 16 months, Editor. He has published more than 130 garden-related articles and book reviews and has a book of his own on the way from North Point Press. Tom has been a judge at most of the major flower shows, served on the board of the New England Wild Flower Society, and has appeared on radio and television garden-related programs.

Horticulture Workshop: Must-Have Magnolias

Friday, April 18, 9:30 am to 2 pm
Scott Arboretum Blum Classroom and Gardens

Join Andrew Bunting and Rhoda Maurer to learn more about the genus, Magnolia, one of the most popular genera at the Scott Arboretum. In addition to Ilex (hollies) and Quercus (oaks) the Scott Arboretum's magnolia collection is recognized as a national collection through the North American Plant Collections Consortium (NAPCC). Over the last several years we have added dozens of new cultivars and species to our collections and this class will highlight the best of those for gardens of the Delaware Valley. During the course we will spend ample time in the collection studying individual plants, as well as observing how they can be used in the landscape. We will also enjoy a digital presentation highlighting plants that might not be in bloom in the gardens. Each student will receive Plant Data Sheets for 20 selected magnolias. Please dress for weather and walking. Registration is limited to 24 and includes lunch.
