Sunset Sippin': Monarda and Martinis

Experience the beautiful summer evening blooms of Monarda while sipping martinis with friends at the Scott Arboretum. Guided Tour: A Walk with the Curator

Tours depart from the Scott Arboretum Offices and are free and open to the public.
Join Andrew Bunting, Curator of the Scott Arboretum, for a series of free tours at the Scott Arboretum. "A Walk with the Curator" program, previously only available to interns of the Scott Arboretum, provides an in-depth look at the collections, gardens, and plant selections through the eyes of the man responsible for curating the collection. Andrew Bunting will discuss the most recent accessions acquired for the collection, why plants were removed from the collection and maybe should be removed from your garden, as well as the latest garden designs at the Scott Arboretum. The tours are one Monday each month from 2:30 to 3:30 pm, and the topics are the curator's preference.

Woody Plant Conference

On Friday, July 18, 2007 the twelfth annual Woody Plant Conferencewill be held at the Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College from 8:30 am to 5 pm. This popular conference is co-sponsored by Chanticleer2, Longwood Gardens3, The Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania4, The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society5, The Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College and Tyler Arboretum6.
This popular day-long conference is hosted in the Delaware Valley of Pennsylvania, an area with a rich garden history. The conference covers a variety of topics of interest to horticulturists and avid gardeners. Optional study tours of the Scott Arboretum's extensive woody plant collection will also be available.
Included in your registration packet will be a FREE weekend admission pass to Chanticleer, Longwood Gardens, The Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania, and Tyler Arboretum for the weekend following the conference.

Learn about the inner-workings, benefits, and beauty of green roofs while exploring the two we have at the Arboretum. Please note the level of difficulty on these tours is higher than others we offer: a brisk walk is required between the two gardens and the second roof is reached only by a narrow, steep ladder. Each of these tours is led by one of the following: Jeff Jabco, Sheila Magee, Dale Nemec, or Lars Rasmussen.

Workshop: The Evening Garden

After a long day of working in your summer garden, don’t you want to sit back, relax and enjoy the beauty you have created under a peaceful, starlit night sky? Unfortunately, for many of us living in an urban setting, our night sky is not as visible as it once was. Join Elizabeth Haegele and Julie Jenney as they teach you proper and responsible garden lighting that will help preserve our night sky. Liz and Julie will also guide you through the most important aspects of designing and creating a beautiful evening garden including the selection of night blooming plants, proper garden lighting, and an appreciation for the natural world after the sun sets . Each participant will receive a night-blooming plant to take home. Registration is limited to 24 and includes wine and hors d’oeuvres. Please dress for some time spent outside in the garden.
