Crum Creek Clean-up
Thursday, September 4, 9 am to Noon
Meet in James Frorer Holly Collection
Join the Scott Arboretum staff, Arboretum volunteers, students, and community members to beautify our neighborhood treasure, the Crum Creek. Volunteers are needed to help pick up trash, install water bars, and remove log jams throughout Crum Creek and its surrounding areas on the Scott Arboretum grounds. Pizza and refreshments will be provided to volunteers. Please call 610-328-8025 if you would like to sign-up as a volunteer.

Nature's Narratives: Second Nature

Join the book discussion group "Nature's Narratives" as they discuss Michael Pollan’s Second Nature: A Gardener’s Education. This book follows his learning experiences in gardening throughout the course of a year in his Housatonic Valley garden in Connecticut. Pollan’s way with words and his philosophy on gardening will entertain the novice and experienced gardener and everyone in between.
Connect with fellow garden enthusiasts and book lovers as they meet to discuss books about plants, nature, and the environment. “Nature’s Narratives” is a book discussion group sponsored by the Scott Arboretum where readers come together to discuss a book once a month and to share in the reading experience.
The discussions are free and open to the public and will take place in the Scott Library. Participants will need to read each month’s selection prior to the discussion. Feel free to bring your lunch for our lunchtime discussions. Refreshments and coffee will be provided for our evening discussions. One copy of each book is available for members to check out of the Scott Arboretum’s Horticultural Library. Advanced registeration is required. Scott Associates' Garden Day

This year's gardens will be in and around Ridley Creek State Park. Tour the gardens from 1 to 5 pm; the Garden Day reception will be held at Tyler Arboretum, from 4 to 6 pm. Admission is free for members; nonmembers can purchase tickets for $25 for adults and $15 for children. Members will be mailed descriptions and directions to the gardens a month before the event. Guided Tour: A Walk with the Curator

Join Andrew Bunting, Curator of the Scott Arboretum, for a series of free tours at the Scott Arboretum. "A Walk with the Curator" program, previously only available to interns of the Scott Arboretum, provides an in-depth look at the collections, gardens, and plant selections through the eyes of the man responsible for curating the collection. Andrew Bunting will discuss the most recent accessions acquired for the collection, why plants were removed from the collection and maybe should be removed from your garden, as well as the latest garden designs at the Scott Arboretum. The tours are one Monday each month from 2:30 to 3:30 pm, and the topics are the curator's preference.

Sunset Sippin': Chartreuse and Chardonnay

Enjoy the striking color of chartreuse in the Terry Shane Teaching Garden while enjoying a glass of Chardonnay. This year’s annual border features a vivid combination of chartreuse plants like Jasminum officinale ‘Fiona Sunrise’, Nephrolepis exaltata ‘Tiger’, and Xanthosoma maffa ‘Aurea’.
The evening will also include a raffle for great prizes, as well as tours by Arboretum staff. Tickets are available at the entrance to the event or in advance at 610-328-8025 or click here. Tickets purchased in advance receive a free plant. The cost is $15 for members and $30 for nonmembers.These events are made possible by the support of local breweries, wineries, and distilleries.

Learn about the inner-workings, benefits, and beauty of green roofs while exploring the two we have at the Arboretum. Please note the level of difficulty on these tours is higher than others we offer: a brisk walk is required between the two gardens and the second roof is reached only by a narrow, steep ladder. Each of these tours is led by one of the following: Jeff Jabco, Sheila Magee, Dale Nemec, or Lars Rasmussen.

Plantsman's Lecture: David Howard

Horticulture Workshop: Native Ferns
Monday, September 22, 10 am to 1 pm
Scott Arboretum Blum Classroom
Gregg Tepper and Marcie Weigelt of Mt. Cuba Center in Greenville, Delaware will lead an illustrated discussion of several commonly occurring native ferns with an emphasis on lesser known native ferns that grow well in Delaware Valley Gardens. This class will be geared towards the novice and professional gardener, bringing each one step further into the fascinating world of ferns. This class will include plant fact sheets of the featured ferns. Registration is limited to 24 and includes lunch.
