Tried and True! Proven Perennials from the Chicago Botanic Garden's Trials

Join Chicago Botanic Garden’s Plant Evaluation Manager Richard Hawke as he reveals what has been learned through the Garden’s Plant Evaluation Program – one of the largest and most diverse in the nation, and also one of the few programs in the United States that formally evaluates perennials. A variety of proven perennials, including new selections and old favorites will be highlighted.

Free and open to the public.

Richard Hawke is the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Plant Evaluation Manager, and is responsible for the comparative evaluation of over 10,000 plants representing 1,200 taxa of herbaceous perennials, vines, shrubs and small trees. He is the author of Plant Evaluation Notes, writes for numerous horticulture publications and teaches frequently at the Garden. Richard recently received the Perennial Plant Association’s Academic Award for teaching excellence.

Guided Tour: A Walk with the Curator

Join Andrew Bunting, Curator of the Scott Arboretum, for a series of free tours at the Scott Arboretum. "A Walk with the Curator" program, previously only available to interns of the Scott Arboretum, provides an in-depth look at the collections, gardens, and plant selections through the eyes of the man responsible for curating the collection. Andrew Bunting will discuss the most recent accessions acquired for the collection, why plants were removed from the collection and maybe should be removed from your garden, as well as the latest garden designs at the Scott Arboretum. The tours are one Monday each month from 2:30 to 3:30 pm, and the topics are the curator's preference.

Perennial Plant Conference

Lang Performing Arts Center

This popular day-long conference is hosted in the Delaware Valley of Pennsylvania, an area with a rich garden history. The conference covers a variety of topics of interest to horticulturists and avid gardeners. This year’s topics will range from the curb appeal with native plants to magical mixtures with flower bulbs. Optional study tours of the Scott Arboretum's extensive perennial plant collection will also be available.

 This conference is co-sponsored by Chanticleer, Longwood Gardens, the Hardy Plant Society/Mid-Atlantic Group, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and the Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College.

Included in your registration packet will be a FREE weekend admission pass to Chanticleer and Longwood Gardens for the weekend following the conference. Scott Associates' Fall Festival

Join us at the Scott Arboretum’s Fall Festival as Jacqueline van der Kloet brings alive her design approach through abundant visuals and detailed practical explanation. She'll address spring, summer and fall seasons by showing how to make combinations for private gardens and public sites, in garden beds, naturalized areas, and containers. She will elaborate on how she achieves her signature design mixes. Gain from her years of experimentation as she shows how to re-think plant combinations ranging in style from simple to more complicated, straight-forward to highly sophisticated. Plant lists will be provided.

Jacqueline van der Kloet of Weesp, Netherlands, is known for stylish, eclectic designs with inspired plantings of perennials and flower bulbs. Her gardens have a relaxed random feel that belies the artistry behind her plant placement. Her mixes of bulbs, and bulbs mixed with perennials, annuals and flowering shrubs are called pure genius by landscape professionals in her home country and abroad.

Alpine Flowers of Southeastern Tibet

Join avid hiker and photographer, Pam Eveleigh, as she shares beautiful images from her trek through southeastern Tibet. Pam is based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and is the founding member of the Calgary Rock and Alpine Garden Society. In addition to being an avid hiker, alpine gardener, and Primula specialist, her main interests are macro and floral photography. Beyond Point and Shoot Digital Photography: Session One: Techniques

Skilled gardener and inspired photographer, Rhoda Maurer, will share her 25 years of photographic experience and engage participants with varied new and underused techniques for digital cameras. For either or both sessions students are required to bring: digital camera and its associated equipment (i.e. filters, tripod, etc.) and adequate memory card. Registration is limited to 10 per session. Rhoda is the Collections Documentation and Projects Manager for the Scott Arboretum. Her images appear in Scott Arboretum publications as well as Horticulture Magazine, Green Scene, Fine Gardening, and John Grimshaw’s recent book, New Trees.

 

Session One will cover topics such as: composition, filters, exposure compensation, white balance, shutter speed, and depth of field. This class is aimed towards those with knowledge of their camera's functions and we ask that you review your manual before class. Certain functions such as aperture and shutter priorities will be reviewed and it will be important that your camera has these manual functions. Time will be spent in the classroom, outdoors shooting photos, and critiquing each others work. Session Two will be an opportunity to explore your own creative vision using the techniques learned in Session One. Time will be spent in discussion, photographing, creative excercises, and critiquing with Rhoda’s guidance. If you are already comfortable using the techniques outlined in Session One, you can sign up for Session Two on its own.

Learn about the inner-workings, benefits, and beauty of green roofs while exploring the three we have at the Arboretum. This tour will include our newest green roof on Kemp Hall7. Tours will be led by staff of the Scott Arboretum. Please note the level of difficulty on these tours is higher than others we offer: a brisk walk and several steps are required to reach the final roof.
