Early Morning Photo Walk

Wednesday, June 16, 5 to 7am
Departs from Wister Center

Join Rhoda Maurer for an early morning photography walk highlighting seasonal features at the Scott Arboretum. By far, the best quality of natural light is available during what’s often referred to as the ‘golden hour.’ The light is not harsh but soft and casts long shadows. The skies take on a brilliant range of hues and the colors change quickly enough to reward a photographer with multiple photographs, each unique in its own way, in a very short time. When you first gather, Rhoda will give insider tips on the best places to capture good shots for that particular day. Then head out on your own for an hour and a half and conclude with others in the Wister Center to share what you have taken on your camera’s viewfinder over a cup of coffee. This casual gathering is an opportunity to have time with fellow photographers and garden lovers, share your craft, learn from others, as well as have some serious photography time in the garden. Rhoda will be available during the walk for questions and advice. Free and open to the public. Photo walks will be canceled in seriously inclement weather. No registration required, just show up!

Creating a Backyard Habitat
10 am – Noon
Using the gardens of the Scott Arboretum as an example, Harriet Wentz, Landscape Designer and Environmental Educator, will show you how layers of mixed shrubs and trees can create habitat for wildlife, while creating an attractive vegetative screen for privacy, noise, and/or wind. Native perennial groundcovers not only add food sources for wildlife, but also add color and cut down on maintenance when planted in drifts. Plant lists for sun, shade, moist, and dry areas to give ideas for companion plantings will be included. We will go outside rain or shine so dress for the weather!

Noon – 1 pm Break for lunch (please bring your own)

Ornamental Pond Design: Elegant and Worry Free
1 – 2 pm
Rob Grayston, who has installed and maintained ornamental ponds throughout the Brandywine Valley, will discuss how to create an easy-to-maintain ornamental pond. He will share expert design and installation tips, including appropriate size and depth; hints for laying liners and hiding mechanics; details on connecting the pump system; and more information on pond maintenance. Different coping materials will be discussed. A plant list for healthy ponds will be included.

Vegetable Gardening: High Yield in a Small Space
2:30 – 3:30 pm
Shane Morgan, Landscape Designer and vegetable gardener extraordinaire, will discuss how to use small spaces and containers for successful vegetable gardening. She will go over companion planting, use of flowers, cool and warm season plants, and herbs. Plant lists, seed and fruit sources, and a suggested reading list will be included.

Garden Lighting: Low Voltage, Artful Designs
4 – 5 pm

Bus Trip: Gardens of Milford, Pennsylvania

Wednesday, June 23, departs at 7:30 am, approx. return 7 pm SOLD OUT
Departs from the Scott Arboretum offices

Join Betsy Gullan and Julie Jenney for a journey to historic Milford. Although Milford is just one square mile, it is a great attraction for antique collectors, outdoor recreation, and small town charm. Perched on the bank of the Delaware River, Milford is fascinating sporting lovely houses, appealing shops and restaurants, museums, and other attractions. Locals brag that conservation began here. First we will visit Grey Towers, home and gardens of Gifford Pinchot – eminent conservationist, twice governor of Pennsylvania, and first chief of the US Forest Service. After a guided tour of his home and gardens, we’ll lunch at the newly restored Hotel Frauchère before visiting the farm of Richard Snyder on Llama Lane. Mr. Snyder, co-owner of Hotel Frauchère and an important figure in the restoration of Milford, has a herd of 69 llamas plus a large organic vegetable garden, a source of fresh vegetables served at the hotel. Before leaving the area, we will visit a small private garden in town and also Remembrance Place, a small garden that is a greening project of the Milford Garden Club. Lunch and entrance fee to Grey Towers included in cost of trip. Limited to 35. Membership to the Scott Arboretum is required to attend excursions.

Member registration fee: $105
