Excursion: Seashore Gardens of Longport and Margate, NJ

Landscape designer Michael Bowell will guide us through five private seashore gardens he has created and maintains. Michael will discuss successful seashore gardening, emphasize important factors – site location to control effects of wind, salt and intense sun; maintenance, plant selection, and other essential tips and tricks for gardening at the shore. Take notes or just enjoy a beautiful, inspiring day! Bring your own lunch, refreshments will be provided on the bus. Dress for weather and walking. Limited to 30. Membership to the Scott Arboretum is required.

Tours depart from the Scott Arboretum Offices and are free and open to the public.
Learn about the inner workings, benefits, and beauty of green roofs while exploring the three we have at the Arboretum. Please note the level of difficulty on these tours is higher than others we offer;a brisk walk and several steps are required to reach the final roof. Children under the age of 12 are not permitted on the roofs.

Tickets purchased in advance receive a free plant. The cost is $20 for members and $30 for nonmembers. These events are made possible by the support of local breweries, wineries, and distilleries.

Nature Journaling
Saturday, September 25, 10 am to Noon
Gillespie Room, Wister Center
In this class Elizabeth Haegele will explore the many forms of journaling, from illustrations to poetry to leaf pressing, while focusing on the most important ingredient in successful nature journaling: the art of observation. We will engage in several exercises to help fine-tune your observation skills in nature and then you will have the opportunity to begin your own nature journal, one that can last through your lifetime as a record of all that you have learned and experienced from nature. Elizabeth, Urban Forestry Coordinator for the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, is an avid nature journal writer. Her recent six-month hike through the Appalachian Mountains was enhanced and made more meaningful by the act of creating a daily journal. Limited to 16. Please dress for time outside.

At Home Series: The Gardens of Nancy Ondra and Chris Beadsley

Drive on your own to Quakertown.
The At Home Series is an exclusive offering for members to get a sneak peek into must-see, private gardens. This program begins at the garden of Nancy Ondra, accomplished author or co-author of a dozen books on gardening. Her garden, an abundance of bloom with fantastic color combinations and touches of whimsy, will leave you inspired. Nancy contributes to two garden blogs: www.gardeninggonewild.com and www.hayefield.com. Just down the road is the garden of architect Chris Beardsley. Of his 30-acre property, three acres have been cultivated for the buildings, gardens, and stream providing a wonderful sense of place. Bring your own lunch and make a day of it in the Quakertown area. Transportation is on your own. Directions and destinations will be emailed to participants. Limited to 20. Membership to the Scott Arboretum is required.
