Workshop: Improve Your Soil: Vermicomposting
Saturday, November 6, 1 to 4 pm

Join Mark Highland, founder and president of Organic Mechanics – a company “passionate about all natural, sustainable gardening that provides superior results” – to create your very own valuable soil amendment. Vermicomposting is a process where worms consume and transform organic materials into worm castings, a rich usable addition for the soil. Worm castings are valued for their ability to increase soil moisture, and provide for better soil structure and biology. You will learn all about the process of vermicomposting and how to have healthier soil that is more alive, and create a worm bin to take home with you! Cost includes materials for the bin; coupons to obtain worms will be distributed in class. Limited to 25.

Nature's Narratives: The Monkey Wrench Gang

Join fellow garden enthusiasts and book lovers as they discuss books about plants, nature, and the environment. “Nature’s Narratives” is a book discussion group sponsored by the Scott Arboretum where readers come together to discuss a book once a month and share in the reading experience.
The discussions are free and open to the public. Participants will need to read each month’s selection prior to the discussion.

Sustainability Seminar

This seminar is co-sponsored with the Association of Professional Landscape Designers
A day of inspiration, vision, and top-notch information for anyone interested in sustainability and how it can be more effectively integrated into home landscapes! This seminar will be an excellent learning opportunity for new and avid gardeners, as well as landscape design professional. Edgar David will begin our day on sustainability. A former professor in the landscape architecture program at Temple University he has a design build practice focusing on sustainable design. Edmund Snodgrass, who started the first green roof nursery in the United States and is owner and president of Emory Knoll Farms Inc. and Green Roof Plants in Maryland will discuss greening the roofs of our communities. A tour of a green roof will allow a first-hand look at Swarthmore's early adoption of the practice. Paul Van Meter, an accomplished landscape gardener, will inspire and encourage with his presentation on creating gorgeous sustainable design. Larry Weaner of Larry Weaner Landscape Associates, long famous for award-winning ornamental horticulture focusing almost exclusively on natives, will present native plant composition, through the perspectives of space and time. Bring your own lunch, although light refreshments will be provided throughout the day. Limited to 50.

Guided Tour: A Walk with the Curator

Tours depart from the Scott Arboretum Offices and are free and open to the public.
Join Andrew Bunting, Curator of the Scott Arboretum, for aseries of free tours at the Scott Arboretum. "A Walk with the Curator" programprovides an in-depth look at the collections, gardens, and plant selections through the eyes of the man responsible for curating the collection. Andrew Bunting will discuss the most recent accessions acquired for the collection, why plants were removed from the collection and maybe should be removed from your garden, as well as the latest garden designs at the Scott Arboretum. The tours are from 2:30 to 3:30 pm, and the topics are the curator's preference.

Rhoda will be available during the walk for questions and advice. Photo walks depart from the Wister Center.

Workshop: Winter Containers

Gillespie Room, Wister Center
Join curator, Andrew Bunting to learn different variations of winter containers and how they can provide interest throughout the winter months. He will lead you through the process of planting a successful winter container, including: pot selection, potting medium, drainage, and site selection. Selecting hardy plants for the Delaware Valley winter will also be covered. Andrew will be demonstrating outside as he plants several of Scott's containers for the winter, so be sure to dress for the weather. Includes three hardy plants for each participant. Limited to 25.
