Nature's Narratives: Refuge

Wister Center
Join fellow garden enthusiasts and book lovers as they discuss books about plants, nature, and the environment. “Nature’s Narratives” is a book discussion group sponsored by the Scott Arboretum where readers come together to discuss a book once a month and share in the reading experience.
The discussions are free and open to the public. Participants will need to read each month’s selection prior to the discussion.

Winter Celebration: The Camera Always Lies-Adventures in Garden Photography

Join professional horticultural photographer Rob Cardillo, as he reveals the art and artifice of garden photography. Peer through his lens to understand how he captures the essence of gardens both local and abroad. Find out how the human eye perceives images, what new digital technologies offer, and why he hates white flowers. Be inspired by his color and composition and nurtured by the beauty of his vision. Learn what makes great images great and gather a handful of ideas guaranteed to improve your picture making and taking. Invitations to members will be mailed in early November.
$45/person includes lecture and reception with cold and hot hors d’oeuvres.

Join Rhoda Maurer for these opportunities to have time with fellow photographers and garden lovers, share your craft, learn from others, as well as have some serious photography time in the garden. Rhoda will be available during the walk for questions and advice. Photo walks depart from the Wister Center.

You’ll also meet a few of the people behind these amazing new introductions!

Chris has also promised a special “behind-the-scenes” look at his 15 year-old Hellebore breeding program. He’ll show you how far we’ve come from the original hellebores and what the future holds for fluffy double flowers and fancily frilled evergreen foliage.
For over 15 years, Chris has had the privilege of traveling the world and visiting plant breeders in search of the best new plants to introduce to American gardeners. Chris began his career at Wayside Gardens, where he was director of horticulture for over 5 years. Breeding company Terra Nova became his second home where he was marketing manager for nearly three years before he partnered with Mary Walters to launch their online mail-order plant company, Great Garden Plants.

Jeff Jabco, Horticulture Coordinator and Julie Jenney, Educational Programs Coordinator for the Scott Arboretum, will be leading a very special trip for Scott Associates next September to private and public gardens on Long Island. Join them for a sneak preview as they share with you the inspiring gardens they saw on our 2010 scouting trip: LongHouse Reserve, Planting Fields, vineyards, and several fantastic private gardens‐‐some intimate and detailed; others with beautiful views of the coast and sound beyond. You won’t want to miss the real thing so mark your calendar now for September 20‐23, 2011 to be a part of this trip!
Free and open to the public, Travels at Twelve are an informal way to share what has been seen and discovered in various gardens and natural spaces both in the United States and abroad.
