Lecture: Plant Hunting in Western China

Join Andrew Bunting, curator, as he relives his adventures plant collecting in the mountains in Sichuan Province. Andrew will show the wealth of habitats explored, as well as take us through the rich flora of western China filled with dozens of taxa of Acer, Magnolia, Rhododendron, Arisaema, to name only a few!

Guided Tour: Green Roof

Tours depart from the Scott Arboretum Offices and are free and open to the public.

Learn about the inner workings, benefits, and beauty of green roofs while exploring the three we have at the Arboretum. Please note the level of difficulty on these tours is higher than others we offer; a brisk walk and several steps are required to reach the final roof. Children under the age of 12 are not permitted on the roofs.

Join Rhoda Maurer for this opportunity to have time with fellow photographers and garden lovers, share your craft, learn from others, as well as have some serious photography time in the garden. Rhoda will be available during the walk for questions and advice. Photo walks depart from the Wister Center.

Join Scott Arboretum intern Josh Coceano as he leads you through how to create your own unique terrarium. After an illustrated discussion of how terrariums became popular in Victorian England, Josh will cover how to make an attractive terrarium for your home. We will supply all materials needed, including three plants for each participant. A list of where to get more plants as well as information on care and maintenance will be provided. Josh will even bring in his own terrariums for inspiration! Limited to 14.

CANCELLED: Workshop: April Glory: Unusual Herbaceous Perennials featuring Species Peonies

Saturday, April 16, 1 to 3 pm
Gillespie Room, Wister Center

Join Chuck Hinkle, garden supervisor; Jeff Jabco, coordinator of horticulture; and Eleanor Tickner, co-founder of the Mid Atlantic Peony Society (MAPS), to experience and learn about exceptional herbaceous perennials for the April garden. Unusual and native perennials, early flowering Clematis, species peonies and a few early flowering tree peonies will be covered. Come learn about Hepatica, Epimedium, Mertensia, Pulmonaria, Senecio, Jeffersonia, Dicentra and many more early spring-flowering plants. Class will conclude with weather dependent/optional walk to see many of these plants in bloom. Free species peony seedling to all attendees. Other species seedlings will be for sale (cash or check only). Limited to 40.
