Sustainability Seminar

This seminar is co-sponsored with the Association of Professional Landscape Designers

Visionaries Rick Darke, Ed Snodgrass, and Larry Weaner will lead a day of inspiration as they share their knowledge through instructional advice. This is for anyone interested in sustainability and how practices can be more effectively applied to residential landscapes. An excellent learning opportunity for avid gardeners, design professionals, and new gardeners. Limited to 50.

9:00 am Optional green roof tour
10:30 am Rick Darke, Sustainable Practices and the Modern Ecology – Uses a broad array of designed landscapes and habitats to illustrate and lead discussion on creative and realistic strategies for making and managing beautifully functional places in sync with today’s ecology.

1 pm Ed Snodgrass, Planting our Future: Green Roofs – Offers a unique opportunity for professionals interested in learning more about the design, engineering, and planting of sustainable roof systems and their part in our future.

2:45 pm Larry Weaner, Breaking the Rules: Ecological Design for the Real World – Examines practical, concrete processes for creating easily managed landscapes that seamlessly combine ecological diversity, cultural expression, and the traditions of garden design.

Rick Darke, President of RICK DARKE LLC, is a widely published author, photographer, lecturer and consultant focused on regional landscape design, planning, conservation, and enhancement. Blending art, ecology, and cultural geography, Darke is dedicated to the design and stewardship of the livable landscape. He has studied and photographed North American plants in their habitats for over 30 years, and this work is reflected in his articles and books including The American Woodland Garden: Capturing the Spirit of the Deciduous Forest, which has received the American Horticultural Society's Book Award, the Garden Writers' Association Golden Globe Award for book photography, and the National Arbor Day Foundation's Certificate of Merit. Edmund C. Snodgrass started the first green roof nursery in the United States and has collaborated on green roof research with colleges and universities. A fifth-generation farmer and nurseryman, he is owner and president of Emory Knoll Farms Inc. and Green Roof Plants in Street, Maryland, specializing in plants and horticultural consulting for green roofs. In the 1980s Ed redesigned Emory Knoll using the principles of sustainability. A committed conservationist, he has put most of his land into an agricultural preservation trust. It is the only nursery in North America that is solely dedicated to green roof plants. Larry Weaner has been practicing professional landscape design since 1977. In 1982 he founded Larry Weaner Landscape Associates, a firm with a national reputation for combining environmental sciences and the tradition of garden design. His projects have spanned more than ten states, have been featured in national and international publications, and have been included in garden tours sponsored by the Association of Professional Landscape Designers, The American Horticulture Society, and The Garden Conservancy. Larry speaks widely as guest lecturer and instructor for horticultural and environmental organizations and agencies throughout the US, and developed New Directions in the American Landscape (NDAL) in 1990, a conference series dedicated to the study of ecological landscape design and management. http://www.lweanerdesign.com/

Guided Tour: A Walk with the Curator

Tours depart from the Scott Arboretum Offices and are free and open to the public.

Join Andrew Bunting, Curator of the Scott Arboretum, for a series of free tours at the Scott Arboretum.This program provides an in-depth look at the collections, gardens, and plant selections through the eyes of the man responsible for curating the collection. Andrew Bunting will discuss the most recent accessions acquired for the collection, why plants were removed from the collection and maybe should be removed from your garden, as well as the latest garden designs at the Scott Arboretum.

Nature's Narratives: Insectopedia

Join fellow garden enthusiasts and book lovers as they discuss books about plants, nature, and the environment. “Nature’s Narratives” is a book discussion group sponsored by the Scott Arboretum where readers come together to discuss a book once a month and share in the reading experience. This month the group will discuss Hugh Raffles' Insectopedia. This book provides a truly unique insight into the world of insects.

The discussions are free and open to the public. Participants will need to read each month’s selection prior to the discussion. Call 610-328-8025 for registeration.

Learn about winter interest at the Scott Arboretum including our 2011 winter container collection.The tour will begin at the Scott Arboretum offices and is free and open to the public. Workshop: Winter Container

Friday, November 18, 1:30 to 4 pm
Gillespie Room, Wister Center

Andrew Bunting and Scott Intern Josh Coceano will discuss variations of winter containers and how they can provide interest from autumn to March. Andrew and Josh will lead you through the process of planting a successful winter container including: pot selection, potting medium, drainage, and site selection. Selecting hardy plants for the Delaware Valley winter will also be discussed. Demonstrations will be done outside with several of Scott's containers so be sure to dress for the weather. Includes three hardy plants for each participant. Limited to 24.
