Nature's Narratives: The Covenant of the Wild: Why Animals Chose Domestication

Wednesday, November 14, 5:30 to 6:30 pm
Wister Center

Join fellow garden enthusiasts and book lovers as they discuss books about plants, nature, and the environment. “Nature’s Narratives” is a book discussion group sponsored by the Scott Arboretum where readers come together to discuss a book once a month and share in the reading experience.

This month the group will discuss Stephen Budiansky's The Covenant of the Wild: Why Animals Chose Domestication. Have we domesticated animals for our own benefit? Or have animals used domestication as an evolutionary strategy for survival?

The discussions are free and open to the public. Participants will need to read each month’s selection prior to the discussion. Call 610-328-8025 to register.

Beauty and Decay

Thursday, November 15, 9:30 am to Noon
Wister Center
This event is co-sponsored with the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD credit available)
Registration Deadline: October 25

Are you stressed by a constant quest for perfection in garden design? Some of the most beautiful gardens and landscapes include an element of imperfection. Sit back, relax, and learn to work with a kind of beauty that celebrates natural process, simplicity, imbalance, and the inexorable passing of time. This thought-provoking lecture, reflection, and discussion will be led by the inspiring and provocative landscape architect, Gary Smith.

Those attending will be encouraged to take part in a question and answer session which will focus on how wabi-sabi can translate into the designs of our gardens. Wabi-sabi is the Japanese aesthetic, or the acceptance, of transience and that beauty is imperfect. Gary is not often in town, so don’t miss this exclusive opportunity to learn from him and network with design professionals. Limited to 40.

Registration fee: $45                      Members of the Scott Arboretum and APLD: $35
Registration Deadline: October 25
