West Garden
In 2006, Gil and Barbara Kemp endowed the maintenance of the house and garden at 550 Elm Avenue. This property has traditionally served as the home to the Vice-President of Development for Swarthmore College, as it does now for Dan West and his wife, Sidney. The garden was named in their honor. Overgrown declining plants were replaced with choice small trees such as a paper bark maple, a ‘Forest Pansy’ redbud, as well as shrubs such as inkberry hollies, beautybushes, and rhododendrons. The garden serves as an example of a residential garden with designed shrub and perennials borders, seasonal containers, and specimen shade and ornamental trees
