THE SCOTT ARBORETUM OF SWARTHMORE COLLEGE

Art Fennell covers the Scott Arboretum and Swarthmore College's Greening Efforts

“Art Fennell Reports” Jam Sarder visited the Scott Arboretum and Swarthmore College to explore their efforts to green the campus. In his piece originally aired on CN8 and available online at http://www.swarthmore.edu/news/video/green.php, Art Fennell called the Scott Arboretum and Swarthmore College front runners in this effort.

“Art Fennell Reports” featured the 5,100 sq. ft. green roof installed on the Alice Paul Resident Hall as well as the LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, certified building, the Science Center. The interview with Jeff Jabco, Director of Grounds and Coordinator of Horticulture, highlighted the energy efficiency of a green roof which helps retain 50 to 90% of rainfall, extends the life of the roof membrane from 10 to 15 years to 30 years, helps reduce heating and air conditioning costs by providing insulation to the building, and provides habitat for birds and insects.

The projects highlighted by the “Art Fennell Report” are only some of the many efforts ongoing at the Scott Arboretum and Swarthmore College to green the campus.
