THE SCOTT ARBORETUM OF SWARTHMORE COLLEGE

Local Artist and Renowned Wood Carver, Marty Long at Scott Arboretum

Starting December 22 nd local artist and renowned wood carver, Marty Long will begin creating a sculpture near the Faulkner Tennis Courts at the Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College. Stop by and observe the transformation of the remains of the majestic Bender Oak into an attractive woodcarving.

Over Swarthmore College’s winter break, Marty Long will carve the stump of the Bender Oak into a twisting oak leaf and acorn. The leaf will be in the likeness of the Bender oak leaf.

In the late summer, the majestic Bender oak, Quercus x benderi finally succumbed to old age. It was estimated to be 350 years old and probably a remnant of the original hardwood forests which covered this area. For safety purposes arborists reduced this to a massive stump over the summer.

Marty Long’s wood carvings can be seen throughout the Delaware River Valley at private residences, as well as a public installation at the Morris Arboretum. He has been doing Ice Sculpture and Wood Carving for 10 years. He is a member of the National Ice Carving Association which hosts competitive ice carving events. Marty won a Silver Medal at the 1998 World Ice Art Champions in Fairbanks, Alaska as well as several first place medals in the NICA United States competition circuit.
