Gardens and Tonic: Ikebana Exhibition from the late Summer/Early Autumn Garden

November 4, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Free

Join Linda Brinkmann, narrator, and members of the Delaware Valley Chapter of Ohara Ikebana as they share creations of the late summer/early autumn season. Be inspired by the plethora of garden materials used in their ikebana creations: trees, bushes, woody plants, herbaceous perennials, grasses, and flowers. The images in this virtual exhibition are from studio time in members’ homes, from the early September 2021 exhibition at Shofuso (Japanese House of Fairmount Park, Philadelphia) and from this special season’s ikebana classes.

At the age of 17, as a Rotary Club International exchange student, on the beautiful island of Aoijima (Blue Island) off the coast of Nagato Shi in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, Arlinda (Linda) Brinkmann began her study of ikebana in the Ikenobo School. Her first arrangement was of Japanese iris in a three-legged chalice-like bowl. To this day, she cannot separate her love of ikebana from her affection for her first ikebana teacher who laughed and smiled all the time, even while re-doing Linda’s arrangement in a teaching moment. Fast forward to 1995. Linda began studying Ohara ikebana under the tutelage of Mrs. Ronnie lorio, who she met at the Japanese House (Shofuso) in Philadelphia. Ten years later, Linda continued her studies under Mrs. Ronell Douglass after Mrs. Iorio moved to a new city. Linda also attended monthly workshops with Grand-master Mutsuo Tomita of NYC, the head of the Ohara School in North America. She earned her Associate Second Degree Master certificate in 2013. Linda continues to attend ikebana classes with Mrs. Ronell Douglass and to exhibit, most recently at the Ikebana International #71 (Philadelphia) Exhibition at Shofuso in September 2021. Her teachers have inspired and continue to inspire her with their knowledge and their art.
