Gardens and Tonic: The Unbiased Eye: Success and Failure in the Garden

November 11, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Free

Take a journey through the studio gardens of award-winning designer Donald Pell as he focuses an unbiased eye on what is and is not working in the novel plant communities he creates. Not all plants “play nice,” which can challenge the integrity of garden designs, forcing the gardener to make revisions as a horticulturist and artist to keep plants in check. Don will share his approach to editing the landscape, and highlight his more successful planting compositions, those that need a stricter hand, and those that didn’t go quite as planned.

For over 25 years, Donald Pell has been reshaping landscapes throughout the Eastern United States by juxtaposing what we know with the unexpected, to create an endless wonder of visual possibility. With a focus on adventurous, immersive placemaking, his naturalistic designs magnify beauty through the masterful connections between stunning plants, hardscape, and sculptural features.

Donald Pell’s landscapes have won top design awards from the Perennial Plant Association (PPA), the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD) and, most recently, a Silver Medal in his first-ever appearance at the Philadelphia Flower Show.

Situated on a 14-acre farm in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, Don’s studio garden has become a frequent destination for naturalistic garden design enthusiasts and horticultural education groups.
