SUMMARY:Walkovic & Schumacher Memorial Lecture: Celebrating Plants in the Winter Garden
DESCRIPTION:Due to expected inclement weather\, this event will now be held virtually only.\nThe in-person attendance option is no longer available. All registered participants will receive updated access details prior to the event. We look forward to connecting with you online. \nThe winter garden is truly a low maintenance affair and a time to enjoy – no weeding\, no watering\, and no deadheading! The winter landscape may be quiescent\, but the garden need not be bleak. Plants with brightly colored berries\, twigs\, stems\, foliage\, and even winter-blooming flowers shrug off the snow and cold. They bring cheer\, even as the sun enters Capricorn.  Warren Leach\, landscape horticulturist and author of the new book Plants for the Winter Garden from Timber Press\, will showcase gardens he has designed that celebrate the winter season as well as planting design ideas for your own garden. Plants for the Winter Garden can be purchased through Hardy Plant Society/Mid-Atlantic Group using the link provided during the program.  \nVirtual Registration \nProgram Details \n\nThe webinar link will be included in the confirmation email received after registering online.\nThis webinar will be recorded and available for 2 weeks after the presentation.\nRecording link will be available 2 days after the webinar.\nParticipants must download Zoom.\nEmail us if you have accessibility needs for this program.\nFor more information\, review our program and event policies or call the Scott office at 610-328-8025. \n\nAbout the Presenter Warren Leach is a passionate plant collector\, nurseryman\, horticulturist\, and landscape designer with a depth of knowledge of all garden plants – both perennial and woody plants\, tropical and temperate. Warren is also an admired speaker\, writer\, and educator. For more than thirty-five years\, Warren has been creating beautiful landscapes throughout New England\, as well as making captivating and educational display gardens at Tranquil Lake Nursery in Rehoboth. He is the co-owner of this specialty nursery that is a prominent grower of daylilies\, iris\, and distinctive perennials and woody plants. Warren has received many awards\, including the National Landscape Association Regional Certificate of Merit for Residential Landscape Design and the Rhode Island Nursery and Landscape Association’s First Place Award for Residential Design and Installation. Warren has also taught horticulture and landscape design at numerous institutions including: The University of Rhode Island\, the Brown University Learning Community\, Scott Arboretum & Gardens\, to name a few. Growing up with a florist mother and a father who owned a home center\, he naturally developed a love for plants and craftsmanship. After earning his B.S. in Plant Science from the University of Delaware\, Dan began his career at Mt. Cuba Center\, where he discovered his passion for native plants. His journey then led him to Imperial Nurseries\, where he built strong professional connections and learned the business side of horticulture\, before joining Chanticleer Garden in 1993. At Chanticleer\, where creativity and horticulture merge seamlessly\, Dan oversees the Courtyard Gardens\, focusing on tropical and tender perennials that shape visitors’ first and last impressions. Beyond the garden\, he has shared his enthusiasm through writing for Fine Gardening\, Horticulture\, and Martha Stewart Living; promoting plants on QVC; and appearing on Cultivating Life and Growing a Greener World. He teaches\, lectures\, and builds—from furniture-making workshops to judging the Philadelphia Flower Show. At heart\, Dan is driven by the joy of inspiring others to see the beauty and possibility in plants\, design\, and hands-on creativity. \nLisa Roper is the Gravel Garden and Ruin horticulturist at Chanticleer\, a public garden in Wayne Pa. where she has gardened for the past 26 years in various parts of the garden. Lisa also photographs Chanticleer Garden weekly for What’s in Bloom on the Chanticleer website. Lisa has a BFA in fine art from The Cooper Union in NYC where she studied photography and painting. She is a graduate of the Longwood Gardens Professional Gardener Training Program. Lisa has been a guest gardener at Stellenbosch University Garden in South Africa and Great Dixter in West Sussex\, UK. She is also a contributor to The Art of Gardening\, design inspiration and planting techniques from Chanticleer. In her spare time\, she gardens at home with her husband\, Allan Summers and a flock of chickens who nibble the insects as she weeds.

Bringing the stories to life are the current custodians of these iconic gardens\, who share personal perspectives on the challenges\, rewards\, and responsibilities of caring for these living legacies. Expect rarely shared insights\, newly revealed details\, and a rich collection of moving\, surprising\, and entertaining stories from the gardens themselves. The panelists include: \n\nRebecca Lemonius\, Custodian of Vita Sackville-West’s Long Barn in Kent; horticulturist and student of Great Dixter. Long Barn is the formative garden that preceded Sissinghurst\, where Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson honed their early horticultural vision. \nJulia Boulton\, Chair of Beth Chatto’s Plants & Gardens in Essex; granddaughter of Beth Chatto. Beth Chatto was a pioneer of the “right plant\, right place” philosophy\, whose approach remains foundational to contemporary planting design. \n\n\nClaire Greenslade\, Former Head Gardener at Gertrude Jekyll’s Hestercombe Gardens in Somerset; currently developing a historic walled garden on a private estate. Hestercombe was created in collaboration with architect Edwin Lutyens and stands as a masterwork of design\, craftsmanship\, and artistic partnership. \n\nModerated by renowned landscape designer Annie Guilfoyle\, the panel delves into why these women were so instrumental in shaping horticulture and garden design—and why their ideas remain powerfully relevant today.

SUMMARY:Winter Celebration: “A Garden Inferior to Few…” The Williamsburg Garden of John Custis IV
DESCRIPTION:Due to expected inclement weather affecting speaker travel\, Winter Celebration has been rescheduled to Sunday\, March 22.\nCelebrate America 250 with an exploration of sophisticated garden that is globally influenced but American in execution. \nJohn Custis IV is one of Williamsburg\, Virginia’s more colorful historic residents. In addition to being an influential member of the political elite\, a wealthy plantation owner\, and eventually the first father-in-law of Martha Washington\, Custis was the creator of one of the most renowned colonial gardens of the early 18th century. Custis’ indulgence in ornamental garden design resulted in the creation of a pleasure garden said to rival that of the Royal Governor. Known as Custis Square\, the four-acre garden was said to contain gravel paths\, topiary\, hundreds of native and imported plant varieties\, and even statues. Friendships with gardening luminaries such as John Bartram and Peter Collinson opened up Custis to a global palette of plants and the correspondence between these “brothers of the spade” has revealed much about the plants within the garden. However\, the actual appearance and layout has remained a mystery… until now. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation has just concluded a five-year archaeological excavation to uncover this important lost landscape.  \nWe will explore the evidence gathered through excavation and specialized environmental analysis to discover the design for the garden\, revealing a truly baroque layout. From the locations of individual fruit trees to the evidence for large-scale earthmoving to create vistas\, the results of this research have provided details recorded nowhere else. Developed at a time of transformation in European garden fashions\, studying Custis’ garden provides an opportunity to better understand how elite Americans translated new landscape conventions into a different cultural and environmental setting. The result is a sophisticated garden that is globally influenced but American in execution. \nEvent schedule:  \n3:00 pm – Lecture  \n4:00 pm – Reception with hors d’oeuvres and cash bar \nAfter the lecture\, mix and mingle with the speaker during the reception.  \nFor an easy dinner\, make a reservation at the Broad Table Tavern. Members of the Scott Associates receive a 15% discount at the Broad Table Tavern (discount not valid on alcoholic beverages). \nAdvance registration for this event is closed. Walk-in registrations will be accepted. Bring exact cash ($25)\, check\, or card for payment. Call 610-328-8024 with questions. \nProgram Details \n\nAdvance registration is required.\nLimited to 150 people.\nEmail us if you have accessibility needs for this program.\nFor more information\, review our program and event policies or call the Scott office at 610-328-8025.\n\nAbout the Presenter \nJack Gary is the associate vice president for historic resources for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. He leads a team of archaeologists\, curators\, architects\, and scholars to reveal the hidden stories of Williamsburg’s past. He is currently directing the archaeological research for the restoration of the garden of John Custis IV as well as the research into Williamsburg’s First Baptist Church\, the oldest Black Church in the United States. Jack oversees a collection of over 60 million artifacts and the development and construction of the new Campbell Archaeology Center\, which will open in 2026 as the country’s premier archaeology museum. He is the former director of archaeology and landscapes for Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest\, where he directed the archaeological research that led to the Garden Club of Virginia’s restoration of the ornamental landscape surrounding Jefferson’s villa retreat.  \nAbout ACCESS \nScott Arboretum & Gardens proudly participates in the Art-Reach ACCESS program. Pennsylvania ACCESS/EBT cardholders\, and Art-Reach ACCESS cardholders may receive $2 tickets for the cardholder and up to 3 guests.
