Travels @ 12: The Botanical (& Other) Wonders of São Miguel

January 19, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

FREE

The largest of the Azores, a sub-tropical Portuguese archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, São Miguel is home to several named public gardens, but the botanical wonders aren’t at all contained within their boundaries. Huge hydrangeas line the roads, a unique pineapple is on the menu, and hillsides are covered in lush green with spiky yellow flowers offering a striking look, a sweet nectar, and a beautiful, invasive threat.

Richard A. Doran, Marketing & Communications Manager for the American Public Gardens Association, spent a week on São Miguel last September and in his mind, he’s never left. He’ll take you over and around the 290-square miles of “The Green Island” he experienced with his wife.

Travels @ 12 is an online series for plant enthusiasts to vicariously experience gardens and natural spaces throughout the world. Registration is free but required. Participants must download Zoom. The webinar link will be included in the confirmation email received after registering online.

Richard A. Doran joined the American Public Gardens Association in November 2017. Previous to joining the Association, Richard was Director of Marketing at the Academy of Vocal Arts, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. He has also worked on the staff of Philadelphia City Council, Electric Factory Concerts, and began his career as a correspondent for the Burlington (VT) Free Press. An avid backyard gardener, Richard resides in South Philadelphia with his wife.
