My son purchased this tree for me for mother’s day ,it is the feature of the garden infront of our home in South Dartmouth, MA. The cones which are purple/magenta on mine are growing longer since we planted it around mothers day and therefore weigh some of the branches down, is this normal ?

Your Picea orientalis ‘Skylands’ will not grow true-to-type if grown from seed. Simply put, seed collected from your specimen will not grow to exhibit the golden foliage of ‘Skylands’ and will only resemble the straight species (Picea orientalis) with dark, green needles. ‘Skylands’ is propagated from cuttings that are grafted on to another Picea species.

I’m so glad that you like this conifer. I like it very much as well. Check with your local nurseries, not a big box store, to see if they have it in stock. If they don’t, ask if they can locate one for you now or in early fall.
