Gardens and Tonic: Tree Peonies and More!

May 13, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Free

Join Jeff Jabco for a virtual tour and discussion of Scott Arboretum’s tree peony collection. In addition to watching the collection progress through the flowering season, care and design with tree peonies will also be discussed. Jeff will also share the favorite peonies that Mid-Atlantic Peony Society members grew in their own gardens last year, from tree, to herbaceous, to Itoh-hybrids. This will be a great way to see what they look like and which cultivars do really well in Delaware Valley gardens. We’ll also get tips and tricks from these home gardeners on extending the bloom season, which peonies do well as cut flowers, and which have great fragrance! This week we will also be celebrating Go Public Gardens.

Jeff Jabco, Director of Grounds and Coordinator of Horticulture, has been on staff since 1990. Before coming to Swarthmore, he worked for Penn State University Cooperative Extension as a horticulture agent in southeastern Pennsylvania; he also owned and operated a garden design and vegetable production business. He is a graduate of Penn State University and has a Master’s degree from North Carolina State University in Horticulture/Plant Breeding and Plant Pathology. He is the President of the International Clematis Society and is on the Executive Committee of the Mid-Atlantic Peony Society.

Gardens and Tonic is a series of virtual webinars with horticulture professionals. Grab your favorite beverage and join Julie Jenney from the Scott Arboretum and a featured horticulture professional for plant-related topics, adventures, and stories – as well as design-focused talks on private and public gardens. Time will be set aside to answer your questions.

Registration is free but required. Participants must have Zoom downloaded on their computer and be comfortable using it. The webinar link will be included in the confirmation email received after registering online.
