Enjoy a relaxing and educational day trip through the historic and scenic Awbury Arboretum and Grumblethorpe in Philadelphia’s Germantown neighborhood. In August, both locations come alive with the colors of summer, offering a perfect mix of nature, history, and tranquil charm.
We will begin the day with a visit to Awbury Arboretum, a 55-acre green space home to a diverse range of plants, trees, and wildlife. As you stroll along the winding paths, you’ll encounter beautiful gardens, wooded areas, and picturesque meadows. The arboretum is an excellent spot for nature lovers, bird watchers, and those seeking a peaceful retreat. After our guided tour, lunch will be provided in the historic Cope House.
After lunch, we will make our way to Grumblethorpe, a beautifully preserved 18th-century colonial home, farm, and garden. The family home of the Wisters and built in the 1740s, this historical gem offers a fascinating glimpse into Philadelphia’s past. Grumblethorpe played a role during the American Revolution and is rich with stories, including the important role it played during the Battle of Germantown. We will have guided time both in the house and in the gardens, as well as time to explore on your own. Grumblethorpe has a special connection to Scott Arboretum & Gardens and horticulture in the region: 5th generation John Caspar Wister was the first director of the Scott Horticultural Foundation and Tyler Arboretum.
Travel will be by Swarthmore College van with Scott Arboretum & Gardens staff. Trip registration includes lunch, snacks, refreshments, and guided tour fees.
