Travels @ 12: Into the Rainforest: Tropical Botany in Australia and Singapore

January 14, 2027 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Free

Venture “Down Under” with Swarthmore College Senior Josephine (Josie) Low to Queensland, Australia, where ancient Gondwanan plants like cycads and tree ferns tower above a vast diversity of tropical fruit trees, orchids, and more. From the Daintree Rainforest to the Cairns Botanic Gardens, learn how Australia’s natural history has shaped its unique ecosystems, and how its people steward the land through ambitious reforestation programs. Discover the secret diversity of epiphytic mosses and liverworts living on bark, and their essential relationship with the health of their host trees. Then, travel to the “Garden City” of Singapore, which boasts the world’s largest glass greenhouse and an artificial cloud forest in Gardens by the Bay, as well as Singapore Botanic Gardens, an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Travels @ 12 is an online series for plant enthusiasts to vicariously experience gardens and natural spaces throughout the world. Enjoy these popular virtual programs and connect with fellow plant enthusiasts in person during a weekly Watch Party in the Wister Center. BYO lunch and watch the Zoom presentation on the big screen. Registration is required for each presentation due to limited seating capacity. The Watch Party will be canceled in case of inclement weather.
