As the 2025-2026 Scott Arboretum & Gardens Public Horticulture intern, Katrien had a limited budget and a lifelong dream to visit South America. All roads led to Cusco. Katrien packed a single duffle bag, a borrowed camera lens, a bottle of Tylenol, and a durable poncho to seek out Peru’s lush valleys on the fringes of the rainy season. Now 11 months later, Katrien comes clean about breaking vegetarianism, llama spit, and the unique plants she investigated on her journey.

About the Presenter
Katrien de Waard joined the Scott Arboretum & Gardens staff as the 2025-2026 public horticulture intern and began as a horticulturist, greenhouse & nursery operations in June. She’s previously held public engagement and science communication roles with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and Cornell University Sustainability Office. She’s most notably, however, a lifelong learner. Day-to-day, Katrien often practices Dutch, listens to new, student-recommended artists, gets stuck on the NYT Thursday crossword, or reads the most print pages during the Arboretum for the staff summer reading program.
